Hello! My name is Cate. I am a wife, mom of little ones, a clinical social worker and the owner of Cate Johnston LCSW Counseling LLC. I have worked in many areas of social work for 10 years and have worked in private practice for the last 4 years. I truly enjoy working with children, adolescents, young adults, parents and families to determine needs and a plan for improvement. I approach each client with the belief that each person has the answers and the ability within themselves, I am here to help the process! My approach to working with you is client centered and strengths based, this means YOU and your needs are my focus. I will help you determine appropriate goals, assist you to identify your strengths and utilize those strengths to achieve goals.
What are my qualifications?
I have an undergraduate degree in Child and Family Development and a Masters of Social Work graduate degree, both from Missouri State University. In 2011, I completed two years of supervised practice and obtain my Licensed Clinical Social Work accreditation. I am qualified to supervise LMSW who are seeking full licensure. I am a certified AutPlay Therapy II provider, a play therapy and behavioral therapy-based approach for treating autism, neurodevelopmental disorders, and developmental disabilities. I've completed Level One training for Theraplay, an attachment based therapy for children and families; suitable for children in foster care or who have been adopted both domestically and internationally. I am certified as a Registered Play Therapist- Supervisor. I am a member of the National Association for Social Workers- Missouri Chapter, the Association for Play Therapy and the Missouri Play Therapy Association, serving on the board of this organization 2016-2019.
What is my experience?
I have worked in children services, as a medical social worker, therapist and supervisor at a community mental health agency and as a private practitioner. Through these professions I have gained experience working with all ages who are managing mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder. I have specific training geared towards working with treating autism, neurodevelopmental disorders, and developmental disabilities. I recently completed my Registered Play Therapist- Supervisor certification, I have specific training in child centered play therapy, sand tray, expressive arts and Theraplay- an attachment based therapy suitable for child adopted domestically, internationally and for children in foster care.
